A Jeepney For Pope Francis’ Philippine Visit

A Jeepney For Pope FrancisThe Vatican has just released photographs of the Jeepney for Pope Francis’ 2015 Philippine visit.

Pope Francis, widely known (and respected) for his simple lifestyle, has rejected the luxury Mercedes Benz vehicles preferred by previous pontiffs.  The 78 year old pope caused quite a buzz in 2013 when he gave up the famed armored and bulletproof “pope mobile”. In its place, Pope Francis’ vehicle is a donated used  30-year-old Renault 4 with 186,000 miles on the odometer. Continue reading A Jeepney For Pope Francis’ Philippine Visit

Sending Emergency Supplies to The Philippines

balikbayan emergency suppliesMillions of Filipinos send millions of Balikbayan boxes home every year. But they rarely include any emergency supplies to help their kabayan in the next inevitable disaster. The boxes are loaded with cosmetics, perfume, toys and electronics gizmos, but hardly anything to help survive the next Philippine disaster. Whether it’s a typhoon, earthquake, volcano, or the next “brown out”, every family needs to be prepared.

Best USA to Philippines Remittance Service

Best Philippines Remittance
The best way to send Filipinos money

Fees for a USA to Philippines remittance have plummeted since the first time I sent a Philippines remittance. The first time I sent money to the Philippines from the USA, I nearly choked on the fees. Of course, that was about 1990, and I didn’t have many choices. It was pretty much Western Union or nothing. I could have sent money via my bank – if only my recipients had a bank account. And of course, they didn’t. I also would have paid a ridiculous fee. Luckily, things have changed since the 1990’s. Continue reading Best USA to Philippines Remittance Service

Philippine Typhoon Hagupit Threatens Manila

typhoon hagupit threatens manilaHagupit, the latest Typhoon to strike the Philippines, has taken a sharp turn to the North after making landfall in Eastern Samar province. Now, Typhoon Hagupit threatens Manila (the capitol) and southern regions of the main island of Luzon.

Hagupit (aka “Ruby”) made landfall late Saturday night, December 6th in eastern Samar, according to the Philippine national weather agency, PAGASA. It made a second landfall Sunday over the city of Cataingan on the island of Masbate; the typhoon’s center then passed within 20 km  of Masbate City at 2 p.m. local time Sunday, December 7th.

Typhoon Hagupit Threatens Manila around 8 p.m. Monday

Metro Manila can expect to feel the typhoon’s full effects between 8 to 10 p.m. on Monday.  Seas will be rough to very rough on the seaboards of Luzon, the Visayas, and on the northern seaboard of Mindanao due to Ruby and the annual northeast monsoon, according to PAGASA.

Philippines Prepares for Typhoon Hagupit

Just 13 months after Super Typhoon Haiyan devastated the central Philippines, another storm nearly as strong is bearing down on the nation. Typhoon Hagupit, also known as “Ruby”,  is packing sustained winds of up to 143 miles per hour. (143 miles per hour  = 231 kilometers per hour).

While not quite as strong as last year’s Typhoon Haiyan, what makes this storm just as dangerous is it’s unpredictable nature. Forecasts of Hagupit’s path and severity vary widely. Continue reading Philippines Prepares for Typhoon Hagupit
